Some Evettes also may have 'Master Model' stamped below the emblem. A wooden-bodied clarinet with this emblem is a B12 model, and a plastic-bodied is the E11. Buffet uses these plaques to identify modern, professional-grade clarinets.ĭetermining the model without the original stamp or plaque involves such technical differences that you will need to enlist the help of an expert. If the word 'EVETTE' is stamped in the center of your the Buffet emblem, it is one of the company's student- or intermediate-level clarinets from before 1983. If there is a letter followed by a number, such as B12' or 'E11,' stamped below the emblem, this is the model of your clarinet.Check below the emblem for a small, metal plaque or a marking that appears to have held such a plaque at one time. All Buffet clarinets come stamped with the basic, round logo, so any other distinguishing marks can be used for identification. Beside the top of the register key should be a marking that Buffet uses to identify the model of the clarinet. This makes for a wonderful opportunity to get a vintage "R13" that plays great and has the great dense wood that was used at the time, without breaking the bank.Examine the side of the upper body of the clarinet to find the long, thin key just above the only hole located on the back of the instrument. Most people don't know what to make of them and so they generally are looked on with suspicion. At the time, Buffet sold these horns at a discount as if they were a 2nd line. Construction had progressed far enough that it was economically smarter to finish construction than to scrap the horn. Generally something wasn't cosmetically right with the keywork. Now another thing to look for is a Buffet Crampon "Academy Model." The ones with serial numbers above 50,000 are actually R13's that didn't pass the tight quality control standards in place during the 50's and 60's. I find it confusing since I don't understand what the standard is to place "Master Model" on an Evette or not. I have run into Master Models with any of the three serial number series. The "K" series are the highest regarded and tend to fetch the most money. Usually I see "D," "B," and "K," although others may exist. The other thing to look for is the serial number. THe very best ones are close to R13 in quality and performance and are marked "Master Model." These are fought over on eBay. The good ones are made in France and are wooden.
